It was established in Prescott, Arizona, in 1970 by Wayman Mitchell. The Potter's House was a member of the Foursquare church until 1983 when they separated to form a new independent fellowship.

The church has also been criticised in a number of areas including high levels of control, extreme commitment requirements, and the mistreatment of former members.
